27th September 2011 - Horseshoe Bend Camp

Approximately 2k North of Merbein in the Mildura District at the East end of town via River Avenue along a reasonable dirt road is Horseshoe Bend camping area. Near the boat ramp, there are plenty of level, shaded sites with a pleasant outlook of the Murray River. There are no facilities other than a composting toilet which is a short distance from the camping area. Should the boat area be full, it is worth a walk around to inspect the other sites further away from the toilet that are also suitable for camping.

1st October 2009 - Nyah Harness Club Camping Area

Behind the Nyah Harness Club on the riverbank is a level, well shaded camping area where, if you are fortunate enough, you will have a ringside seat to some pacers doing whatever pacers do by floodlight for about an hour or so on Wednesday night. The camping area is on the river bank and there are large, level, grassy sites near a boat ramp. On the town side of the track is a large area nearer to the toilets, fresh water and a dump point which is also suitable for camping. Nyah is a RV Friendly town and shops are located on the main highway or a larger selection at West Nyah about 2k from the Highway.

26th September 2009 - Manangatang Rest Area - Manangatang

Between Ouyen and Tooleybuc is the village of Manangatang that has a large gravel area opposite the hotel between the main street and the railway line that is the location for the Manangtang Rest Area. Although only one tree is in the rest area, the new facilities make up for any deficiencies. A new disabled hot shower, new toilets, a shelter shed, tank water and free power have all been made available to the camper. The local general store has great take away meals and is recommended.

24th September 2009 - Lake Crosbie Campground - Murray Sunset National Park

By turning off the Mallee Highway at Linga, 10k West of Underbool and following a good dirt road for about 13k’s, you will come to Murray-Sunset National Park and Lake Crosbie Campground. Individual level campsites are provided, each with a table and fire place. Clean untreated water is on tap near the long drop toilets. All campsites overlook the “Pink Lake” which is crystal clear but very salty. The red algae give the lakes their characteristic pink colouring, especially after rain. Well worth the detour off the main road to spend a night or two. Keep a lookout for Ranger Rob who is informative in relation to the history and interesting facts of the park and surrounding area. He also ensures that the park amenities and campsites are well maintained.

17th November 2007 - Hattah-Kulkyne National Park - Mildura / Robinvale District, Vic.

A birdwatchers paradise. Located approximately 70k South of Mildura and 70k West of Robinvale in Victoria, this National Park is easily accessible along a sealed road. There is an information centre just prior to the day area and camping area which is about a further 500 meters along an unsealed track.

The camping area is well shaded, reasonably level and has tables, wood fireplaces and a long drop toilet. Unfortunately at the time of our visit, the drought was in full force and swimming in the lake was not recommended due to algae infestation. The day area has a shelter shed, gas BBQ, tables and chairs.

24th October 2007 - Vinifera State Forest - Swan Hill District - Victoria

Well, another delightful spot. This time we are on the banks of the Murray River about 25k north of Swan Hill in Victoria at a place called Vinifera State Forest. Access is by dirt road from the highway about 10.5k North of Beverford and 4.5k South of Vinifera and a sign near the corner confirms the site. We travelled about 2k along this dirt road until we came to a sign “Chemical Toilets are Preferred” and about 1k further on we came to the banks of the Murray River. Just past the turn was a campsite that we used but further on there are several other suitable sites for Motorhomes & caravans. The sites are a reasonable size and level provide good access to the bank for fishing.
